A Ti Hai is a phrases thats played 3 times and finishes "on the 1" at the beginning of the rhythmic cycle! Wow! you say. But it's really a cool thing
I want to do a ti hai video series and include it in the courses but for now I'm going to try an explain it like this.
Email me if you want me to do a ti-hai series!
Here's the formula....
Lets take the rhythm Malfuf
D s s T s s T s
you can see it has 8 beats
but it can also have 16 beats! just make each 1 of the 8 beats 2 beats.
ok so now it looks like this
D s s s s s T s s s s s T s s s
(Kinda like a wahda rhythm!! )
Next step is to choose a phrase
I'm going to choose
TaKaDoum (this is 3 beats long Ta, Ka and Doum)
and we need a space so let's choose 3 beats as our space.
So we're going to play TaKaDoum 3 times and end on 1... ready?.... no we're not
we need to know where to start
so 16 beats plus 1 to end on one = 17
takadoum times 3 (we need to play it 3 times) is 9
and 2 spaces of 3 = 6
17-(9+6) = 2
so we need 2 spaces before we start!
s s T K D s s s T K D s s s T K D
the last Doum is the 1 of the next rhythm
This formula works for all phrases and all rhythms - not available on youtube
Try playing Malfuf then
s s T K D s s s T K D s s s T K D
while tapping your foot or using the metronome!
Do you end on 1 and if you do keep playing the Malfuf rhythm!
